5 Lessons from $60,000 of Education
When I wanted to become a strength coach, I invested:
$30,000 for my bachelor's
$10,000 for my master's
$20,000 in certs, courses, and mentorships
Here's what $60,000 taught me:
1) School won't teach you everything you need to know... The sooner I realized this, the faster I was able to develop my skills in the field.
2) Wasn't until I finished my BSc did I stop caring about my marks (as long as I was passing). And the better my mental health was.
3) Instead of spending $$$ and time on dozens of courses (that I never finished), I should have:
Focused on deliberate and intentional practice
Been a critical lifelong learner and asked more Qs
Found more mentors who have achieved what I wanted to do
4) Don't be a snob about your credentials. I never put my credentials beside my name (Unless I have to for work). Instead, I let my skills speak for themselves.
There are people outperforming you without any certs...
Take my friend @acamwriter for instance. He was my strength coach who helped me qualify for the 2019 World Powerlifting Championships. Then he became a talented copywriter and brought in $1.2 million in 6 months for 2 companies. Guess what? He has an accounting degree 😂 (Check him out alexcameron.net )
5) I was thinking about training 24/7 and burnt out. When I allowed myself to rest and find other non-work-related hobbies, I felt refreshed and way more productive.
